>Safety Vinyl Flooring
Slip-resistant, hygienic sheet and tile flooring for wet, greasy, and high-risk environments across Hertfordshire.
What Is Safety Vinyl Flooring?
Safety vinyl is a resilient flooring product engineered with enhanced slip resistance through embedded aggregates, surface texture, or raised stud profiles. It is manufactured in sheet, tile, and plank formats and is the standard specification for environments where slips, trips, and falls are a serious risk.
Slip resistance is measured using the Pendulum Test Method (BS 7976), which produces a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). A PTV of 36 or above is considered low slip potential in wet conditions. Many safety vinyl products achieve PTV values of 50 or higher, making them suitable for the most demanding wet and greasy environments.
In addition to slip resistance, safety vinyl is non-porous, chemical-resistant, and easy to clean. When installed as sheet flooring with hot-welded seams and coved skirtings, it creates a continuous, tankable surface that prevents moisture ingress and bacterial harbouring.
We supply and install safety vinyl from Altro, Polyflor, Gerflor, and Tarkett. Each manufacturer offers product ranges targeting specific environments — from general-purpose wet rooms to heavy-grease commercial kitchens requiring the highest slip ratings.
Key Features & Benefits
Safety Vinyl offers a unique combination of practical and performance advantages for commercial environments.
Verified Slip Resistance
Safety vinyl achieves measurable slip resistance through the Pendulum Test. Products are classified from Class R9 (low slip resistance) to R13 (very high slip resistance). We match the classification to the actual risk profile of each zone in your premises.
Hygienic, Seamless Surfaces
Sheet safety vinyl installed with hot-welded seams and coved formers creates a fully sealed, tankable surface. There are no gaps or joints where bacteria, moisture, or contaminants can accumulate — critical for healthcare and food preparation.
Chemical & Grease Resistance
Commercial kitchens, workshops, and laboratories expose floors to oils, degreasers, and cleaning chemicals. Polyurethane-reinforced safety vinyl resists surface degradation and maintains slip performance even after repeated chemical contact.
Comfort Underfoot
Unlike hard ceramic or stone, safety vinyl provides a degree of resilience that reduces leg fatigue for staff working long shifts. This is particularly important in healthcare, catering, and production environments.
Design Options
Modern safety vinyl is available in plain colours, directional designs, and decorative patterns. Altro's Whiterock range, for example, offers 40+ colourways, allowing safety flooring to contribute to interior design rather than detracting from it.

Sectors Where Safety Vinyl Excels
Safety Vinyl is specified across multiple commercial sectors. These are the environments where it delivers the strongest performance.
Healthcare
Wards, bathrooms, and clinical areas require safety flooring with high PTV ratings and impervious, seamless surfaces. Altro Aquarius and Polyflor Polysafe are standard specifications for NHS environments.
View sectorRestaurant & Bar
Commercial kitchens, prep areas, and bar back-of-house need R12-R13 slip resistance to handle grease, water, and high-temperature spillages. Safety vinyl is the legal standard in food service.
View sectorEducation
Science labs, changing rooms, and food technology areas in schools require slip-resistant, chemical-resistant surfaces. Safety vinyl meets these demands while providing easy maintenance for busy facilities teams.
View sectorIndustrial & Warehouses
Production areas, wet rooms, and loading bays in industrial settings benefit from safety vinyl's combination of slip resistance, chemical tolerance, and impact resilience under heavy equipment.

Case Study: Hertford County Hospital, Ward Bathroom Upgrade
The Challenge
A Hertford hospital ward required bathroom flooring that achieved the highest slip resistance with bare feet (PTV ≥50), was fully impervious, and could withstand daily steam cleaning and chemical disinfection.
Our Solution
We installed Altro Aquarius safety vinyl with hot-welded seams and coved skirtings. The product achieves PTV ≥50 in wet conditions and is specifically designed for wet rooms with both shoe and bare-foot traffic.
The Outcome
The bathrooms now have a fully tankable, hygienic surface that has passed every NHS infection control audit. Staff report that the floor feels secure underfoot even when wet, and cleaning is straightforward.
